What's the difference between natural pearls, cultured pearls and imitations?

Natural pearls form randomly and without human intervention inside a mollusc and are extremely rare today. Cultured pearls also form inside a mollusc, but the process is triggered by humans. They're real, grown pearls and make up most of the pearls available today. Imitation pearls, on the other hand, are usually made of glass or plastic with a special coating and have no grown nacre structure.

How do I recognise the quality of a pearl?

The quality of a pearl is primarily determined by its lustre, meaning the intensity and sharpness of its shine. High-quality pearls reflect light clearly and crisply. The surface is equally important: the fewer irregularities or growth marks visible, the more valuable the pearl. Shape, size and colour also play a role. Perfectly round and larger pearls are rarer and therefore usually more expensive. A sufficiently thick layer of nacre also ensures durability and a special depth effect in the shine.

Why do prices for pearl jewellery vary so much?

The price differences result from several factors. Decisive are the type of pearl, its size, its rarity and the quality of lustre and surface. How do I properly care for pearl jewellery?

Pearls are more delicate than many other gemstones, as they consist of organic material. They should always be put on last, after perfume, hairspray or make-up have been fully applied. After wearing, it's advisable to gently wipe the pearls with a soft cloth to remove oily residue from skin or cosmetics. They should be stored separately from harder jewellery to avoid scratches.
